Basecoat
Project Deliverables
BASECOAT is a brand I created that revolves around the idea of nails as an art form. This makes finger nail polish not just something to pass the time or make women’s nails look nice. It is a form of expression for the artist and a new media to create art in. The name “basecoat” comes from the idea that every piece of work starts from a white canvas, a blank wall, or in this case clean nails. Basecoat symbolizes the idea that after the gesso, primer, or bottom clear coat is painted on, the possibilities of creation are endless.

Step 1. Research.
Going into this project I knew I wanted to create something unique and personal to me. My creative outlet is painting and designing nails. The idea behind my brand was to create a nail polish product built specifically with the artist in mind. My research began with companies that are recognizable and well known, such as Coca-Cola and Disney. I also looked into potential competitor brands such as OPI, Essie, and Sally Hansen. From each of these companies, I took their best qualities and then added my own personal touch: Nails as an art form.
Step 2. Sketching.
The brand name is Basecoat because it represents the idea that every piece of work begins with a white canvas, a blank wall, or in this case clean nails. Basecoat symbolizes the idea that after the gesso, primer, or bottom clear coat is painted on, the possibilities the possibilities of creation are endless.
Step 3. Development.
After sketching out my ideas and committing to a logo, I began the development of how the brand would be presented and what the products would look like while simultaneously considering the target audience: artists.
Step 4. Final Product.
After much trial and error, Basecoat's product line was created with final success. Basecoat is unlike any other brand because it combines the best of nail products with the sensibility and ideas of museums. Basecoat allows the artists to be uniquely creative on their own terms.
